Goal frames and sustainability transitions: how cognitive lock-ins can impede crop diversification

چکیده
Abstract Transitions towards more sustainable agricultural systems are often characterised by ‘lock-ins’, understood as self-reinforcing mechanisms that reproduce the status quo and impede change. While socioeconomic, technological institutional lock-ins have been widely used to understand processes of transitions in agri-food systems, role so-called cognitive is still under-investigated. In this study, we focus on how settings create farmers’ decision-making related adoption practices. We apply goal framing for environmental behaviour transition theory explaining socio-technical conditions may shape farmer’s decision-making. Empirically, example diversifying crop rotations with legumes an established strategy increase biodiversity soil health, reduce agrochemical use, emissions pollution, which remains rare European agriculture. use two cases Atlantic pedo-climatic region, Cornwall, UK, Gelderland, Netherlands. Using in-depth interview data farmers extensive supplementary secondary data, explore context-specific interact normative, gain-oriented hedonic frames (un-)desirability diversification legumes. This creates recognisable lock-ins: context drastically perceived viability alternative Our findings case suggest framework developed study help identify regionally specific, well common, barriers solutions comparable practices relevant sustainability systems.

How damage diversification can reduce systemic risk.
We study the influence of risk diversification on cascading failures in weighted complex networks, where weighted directed links represent exposures between nodes. These weights result from different diversification strategies and their adjustment allows us to reduce systemic risk significantly by topological means. As an example, we contrast a classical exposure diversification (ED) approach w...
متن کاملModeling Goal-oriented Decision Making through Cognitive Phase Transitions
Cognitive experiments indicate the presence of discontinuities in brain dynamics during high-level cognitive processing. Nonlinear dynamic theory of brains pioneered by Freeman explains the experimental findings through the theory of metastability and edge-of-criticality in cognitive systems, which are key properties associated with robust operation and fast and reliable decision making. Recent...
متن کاملVisual imagery can impede reasoning
Visual mental images are an important part of human cognition, and it is natural to suppose that they can help us to reason. Various sorts of evidence are compatible with this assumption, including the well-known studies of the mental rotation and the mental scanning of images (Kosslyn, 1980; Shepard & Cooper, 1982). The aim of the present article, however, is to reexamine this assumption, to r...
متن کاملVisual imagery can impede reasoning.
Although it is natural to suppose that visual mental imagery is important in human deductive reasoning, the evidence is equivocal. This article argues that reasoning studies have not distinguished between ease of visualization and ease of constructing spatial models. Rating studies show that these factors can be separated. Their results yielded four sorts of relations: (1) visuospatial relation...
متن کاملDoes Crop Diversification Pay Off
Because of its potential role in providing ecosystem services and private benefits (food security), the concern about the loss of agrobiodiversity has grown. We explore the links between agrobiodiversity and farm financial benefits in small-scale agroecosystems. We measured crop diversity in a subsistence-oriented agricultural production system: home gardens (n=250) in the Iberian Peninsula. We...
